Teeth become discoloured over time for a variety of reasons: coffee, tea or tobacco consumption, antibiotic use, excessive fluoride, or simply age. Teeth whitening is a safe and popular form of cosmetic dentistry. According to the American Dental Association, 96% of users report a whiter smile. Our office provides patients two options for teeth whitening:
- In-office bleaching
- At-home bleaching
1. In-office bleaching consists of the application of a bleaching agent to the teeth and the use of light or heat to catalyze the agent. The gums will be protected from the bleach by either a gel or a rubber shield.
2. At-home bleaching requires a peroxide-based bleaching solution which bleaches the tooth enamel and a custom mouth tray for the patient. The custom tray ensures that the correct amount of whitening solution is used and that the patient's teeth are properly exposed to the whitening solution. A home whitening session lasts for several hours, during which time the patient will have the tray and solution in his or her mouth. This routine is followed for two to three weeks.
